CITY B420 - Praxis Seminar: Seeking Spatial Justice

LEC: 7:10 PM-9:00 PM TH - Restrepo, L.

The power of spatial justice – as an academic theory, a working concept that informs activism, and a lodestar that guides more than a few planning bureaucrats - is a recognition that unequal access to space and the inequitable distribution of public goods and public bads across space is the common denominator that unites movements for economic, social, racial, and environmental justice. This course provides students the opportunity to explore the ground between the academic theories and workaday realities of seeking spatial justice. Students arrange placements with organizations working on questions of transportation, housing, community development, economic development, urban food systems, brownfield remediation or greenspace development – to name only some possibilities. Then, we come together once every other week to compare both the grounded work and heady implications of these diverse experiences.

Prior to taking the course, students will develop a Praxis Learning Plan through the Career and Civic Engagement office. In addition to 8-10 hours per week in a field placement, all students will share a syllabus and core set of readings, but will also be able to tailor their academic experience to their own senses of problem.

*Interested Students should fill out the  for CITY420 by May 2, 2025. Please note the timeline and instructions regarding course registration within the proposal. *
