Exploring Entrepreneurship
An alum-led intensive illuminates future paths
As my final semester at Â鶹AV neared its end, I felt a desire to make my spring break count. More than just a break from classes, I wanted an experience that would enrich me personally and professionally, pointing the way toward a fulfilling future. Thankfully, I stumbled upon the Entrepreneurship & Innovation Intensive hosted by the Career & Civic Engagement Center. This two-day retreat proved to be a highlight of my college journey, exposing me to new ideas, introducing me to inspiring individuals, and expanding my vision of what’s possible.
We were fortunate to hear from successful entrepreneurs who started out just like us, fresh out of college with an idea. Their stories were incredibly inspiring; they shared the realities of being an entrepreneur, what to expect, and how to embrace the possibility of failure as a learning experience. They taught us not to be afraid to take risks and learn from setbacks.
We visited the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where we met with women who were not only clinical doctors and researchers, but also successful entrepreneurs in the science field. They defied expectations and carved their own paths, even when faced with challenges. My biggest takeaway was the importance of collaboration; nothing is impossible if you surround yourself with people who support your dreams and share your vision.
We had the privilege of meeting with successful women in the business, finance, and law industries. I learned the importance of adaptability and strategic thinking in a dynamic marketplace and the intricacies of starting a business, especially financial planning and resource management, crucial skills for any aspiring entrepreneur. The lawyer provided valuable insights into the legal framework surrounding business ventures, emphasizing the importance of risk mitigation and compliance. Hearing from such diverse and accomplished women shattered any lingering doubts I might have had about my own capabilities and solidified my belief that with the right approach and support system, I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
The program created a strong sense of community. I connected with like-minded students who shared my curiosity about business and desire to make a difference. We bounced ideas off each other, inspired each other, and developed friendships.
The intensive was a revelation and a powerful motivator, illuminating a path I had been thinking about but was too afraid to fully consider. Discovering my gift for generating ideas, working as a team, and tackling problems head-on made the long hours feel like time well spent. I now approach thinking about life after Bryn Mawr with a renewed sense of purpose. This opportunity sparked my ambition, and I am determined to continue exploring the world of entrepreneurship.
