The Economic Policy Society (EPS) of Âé¶čAV visited New Haven, Conn., last semester to compete in the Yale International Policy Competition (IPC).
IPC is a competitive, engaging, and challenging outlet for undergraduate students to cooperatively flex their policy-writing, problem-solving, and research skills on real-world problems. Students work together in teams to draft policy briefs that directly respond to an issue raised and present their policy proposals to a panel of judges.
âWe learned about the competition from one of our members, Nora Dell,â says Club President Lyncy Nyandoche â21. âWe thought that this would be an interesting opportunity for our members to learn about policymaking and to network with students interested inâand professionals involved inâpolicymaking.â
The competition focused on policy-briefs that aimed to resolve the South China Sea conflict in South East Asia. The South China Sea dispute has been a long source of distrust and tension with competing claims for territorial sovereignty over islands in the region. In the competition, EPS drafted policy briefs that promoted multi-lateral treaties among countries involved in the dispute so as to resolve it.
âAlthough we didnât win, it was a very eye-opening experience, especially with regards to the level of complexity associated with conflicts facing foreign trade. We got to learn a lot from like-minded students from all over the country and got exposed to individuals who have devoted themselves to making the world a better place. It was a really enriching experience,â says Lyncy.
EPS hosts weekly meetings on campus where students discuss various topics within the field of economics. The members also run an that covers current economic events, including developments in academia as well as domestic and foreign affairs.
The clubs e-board is made up of Club President Lyncy Nyandoche â21, Secretary Flora Chen â21, and Treasurer Billie Mwangi â20. Other club members are Ziyu Wang '22, Aakriti Dhital '21, Joan Ndichu '21, and Nora Dell '19.
Students interested in joining the club should write to Lyncy (lnyandoche@brynmawr.edu) for further information.
