September 4, 2019

Noël Valis, professor of Spanish and director of undergraduate studies for Spanish in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Yale University, has been appointed to the National Council on the Humanities, the 26-member advisory body of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

From the NEH announcement:

Valis was nominated by President Donald J. Trump in 2018 and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Aug. 1, along with 15 other humanities scholars and advocates. National Council members serve staggered six-year terms.

“We are delighted to welcome this distinguished group to the National Council,” said Jon Parrish Peede, chair of the NEH. “Together they bring a wide range of expertise in cultural leadership, government and public policy, international affairs, philanthropy, and numerous humanities fields, including archaeology, languages, law, literature, history, and political science, that will be invaluable to the National Endowment for the Humanities.”

"I absolutely loved my years at 鶹AV and have wonderful memories of the faculty in Spanish and French, of wandering the dim recesses of the lower levels in the Old Thomas Library, and coming up for air in neogothic splendor. There was something at once sacred and profane in entering those corridors. For whatever reason, I always felt that I would turn a corner and run into a minotaur clearly out of its depth. I have carried with me ever since that unsettled sense of the unknown, of adventure that is the Bryn Mawr experience." —Noël Valis, Ph.D. '75
