Jaclyn Lang â09 has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant in mathematics. Jaclynâs Fulbright award will take her to the UniversitĂ© Paris 13, where she will research Galois representations in p-adic families.
âI knew that I wanted to spend some time in France after finishing my Ph.D., because there is a mathematician in Paris (Jacques Tilouine) whose work is very interesting to me and related to my dissertation,â says Jaclyn.
When she was at Bryn Mawr, Jaclyn was a student in the combined A.B./M.A. program in mathematics, which allowed her to earn her bachelors and masters degrees concurrently.
Jaclynâs thesis at Bryn Mawr was focused on the area of algebraic number theory, as is the research that she will conduct in France.
âAt Bryn Mawr I was interested in objects called class groups and elliptic curves. In graduate school, my interests shifted to objects called Galois representations. However, all of these ideas are quite closely tied together,â she says.
In the year after graduating Bryn Mawr, Jaclyn studied mathematics at Cambridge University on a Churchill Fellowship. She then entered UCLAâs Ph.D. program in mathematics.
âAt this point, I am interested in pursuing a career as an academic mathematician,â she says.
are awarded for post-graduate research and study abroad or for positions such as English Teaching Assistants in schools or universities. An applicant must be the recipient of a bachelorâs degree before the beginning date of the grant.
