Eden Valdivieso '23, a French and International Studies double major from Bowie, Maryland, will travel to Morocco as a Boren Scholar.

is designed to increase U.S. knowledge of languages and countries deemed to have security interest for the U.S. Recipients must agree to a “service requirement” to work either in a federal agency with national security responsibilities or in an academic field related to the area of study for which the scholarship was given.

"I'm eager to immerse myself in contemporary Morocco and contextualize my studies of ancient history and French colonization in the current global landscape," says Valdivieso. "With a Boren Scholarship, I will study both Daarija and Modern Standard and immerse myself in the languages at a challenging pace and level. I also have chosen this intense immersive experience because it relates to my career goals in federal work, and specifically the Foreign Service."

Valdivieso will be studying in the capital city of Rabat through the Middlebury Study Abroad Morocco Program at the Mohammed V University.

"As an international studies and language double major, I believe federal service and critical language learning is the next natural step for me."
