Bryn Mawr students: Ever have trouble figuring out just what course to take? Or maybe you are having trouble navigating the pre-registration process, are feeling overwhelmed by your work, or just need assistance organizing for your classes. Bryn Mawr’s Peer Mentor Service is here to help.
"Peer mentors are a great resource to help students explore supports, learning strategies, time management, course planning, and engagement with the community," says Director of Academic Support Services Rachel Heiser.
Bryn Mawr’s Peer Mentors are part of the Dorm Leadership Team and live in each of the residential dorms on campus. The mentors host weekly office hours advertised to the dorm, as well as two informative events a semester, called a "sesh," where they bring in resource people and tackle topics such as internships, course scheduling, stress relief, and on-campus academic resources.
“As a peer mentor, I help students in my dorm navigate their academic lives at Bryn Mawr. This includes working with students one-on-one to develop study skills/reading strategies and communicating with the dorm as a whole about upcoming deadlines. I also work with sophomores and juniors to help with planning majors, minors, and concentrations. I absolutely love being a mentor!” says Elizabeth McGuire ‘20, a Peer Mentor in Rhoads North and Steering Committee Member.
Students can visit mentors during their office hours, during events, or schedule to make an appointment. Mentors are very accessible resources, because they live in the dorms, and they are also available at hours you may not be able to make an appointment with another resource person on campus. Also, it can be beneficial to talk with another student who can relate to matters including academic stress, workload, and balancing life.
